Things may be tough for businesses right now, but there has never been a better time for Teesside companies to grow their own talent. The Tees Valley Combined Authority has recently announced an apprenticeship wage subsidy scheme which could be a game-changer when it comes to getting young people into tech careers.
Introduced as part of the region’s Coronavirus response, TVCA has earmarked £1m for Tees Valley businesses to take on apprentices. The scheme funds 100% of apprentices’ wages for the first 6 months, and 50% for the rest of the apprenticeship, up to a maximum of 2 years.
The support we’re seeing for Teesside is incredible – we’ve seen other local authorities across the country set up funding pots for training costs (of which many SMEs only pay around 5% anyway), but this wage commitment for Teesside is a unique commitment to boost our local economy and invest in the skills pipeline for our region.
If you combine this with the existing support for apprenticeships – including the RAW Digital Talent Academies and the amazing training and mentoring team over at Baltic Apprenticeships – we’ve got the potential for something really special in our region.
The wage support from the Combined Authority could be transformational in helping businesses realise the potential of apprenticeships – but if you’ve never taken one on before, the process can be a little daunting!
This is where we can help. At RAW Digital, we support North East employers to take on truly amazing apprenticeship candidates who have already benefited from a blast of pre-apprenticeship skills training.
Through the RAW Digital Talent Academy, we work closely with employers to identify the skills and behaviours they are looking for in an apprentice, and feed this into our Talent Academies. These two-week programmes in Digital Marketing, Software Development, and IT Support offer young people an intensive introduction to their chosen subject, picking up the basic skills, knowledge and work-ready behaviours to give them a head-start on an advanced apprenticeship programme.
At the end of each RAW Digital Talent Academy, we give our employers the opportunity to interview and hire successful candidates, enrolling them onto a Level 3 digital apprenticeship programme with our training partners at Baltic Apprenticeships.
Throughout the summer, we’ll be running the following RAW Digital Talent Academies:
